The top four performing spray-on formulas:

Target brand Up and Up Sport Continuous SPF 30

Walgreens Sport Continuous SPF 50

Banana Boat Sport Performance Continuous SPF 30

Aveeno Continuous Protection SPF 50

Consumer Reports says all four products worked well even after a person soaked in water for 80 minutes. (Google: Consumer Reports sunscreen for a direct link)

This all sounds great… until you take it one step further and consider what you are actually putting on your skin. The most common ingredients in non-mineral sunscreens are oxybenzone, octisalate and avobenzone, found in 60, 58, and 50 percent of all sunscreens on the market, respectively. The most common, oxybenzone, can trigger allergic reactions, is a potential hormone disruptor and penetrates the skin in relatively large amounts. Some experts caution that it should not be used on children. Three of every five sunscreens rated by EWG (Environmental Working Group) are non-mineral, and one in five sunscreens combines both mineral and non-mineral active ingredients.

I have had bouts with skin cancer — I take this stuff very seriously. Type in your products including makeups. lipbalms and lotions that contain sunscreens and find out how stable the formulation is, how safe it may be for your child and to what degree it can enter your body. Shockingly amazing isn’t it?????????

–Looking out for the health of your body and mind!

(1888PressRelease) April 27, 2010 – Westminster, CO — Everyone has goals, ambitions or dreams that they keep to themselves for fear of failure. Others do not act on their dreams because they have not found the answer to the question, “How can I do this?” For most people not having the answer to “HOW” is enough to make them give up on their dreams and continue doing the same old thing that they’ve always done. Tom Terwilliger, author of 7 Rules of Achievement…The Complete Guide To Programming Your Internal Success Mechanism (published by Morgan James) knows that by following the 7 Rules anyone can answer not only the question of How but also the What and Why of achieving their dreams.

After years of breaking all the Rules as a reckless outlaw biker, Terwilliger knows firsthand that everyone deserves more than what they have learned to settle for. By following the 7 Rules he was able rise above his circumstances and go on to become Mr. America, a Fox Sports Net TV host and a highly successful fitness and executive coach. In the 7 Rules of Achievement, Terwilliger provides an in-depth look at the most empowering component in the achievement process – our ability to properly identify and set goals, and provides the rules that can help you achieve even your most ambitious dreams!

He had a pretty good chuckle as he read part of the quote to me, “The best thing people can do to fight obesity is to stay fit.”… no shit, he said.

And indeed it certainly doesn’t take a “expert” to know that. But here’s the thing – the truth in the simplicity of that statement cannot be denied. Why should it take volumes of written information and billions of dollars in pharmaceuticals, and medical procedures to put that fact into practice.

Yes, it doesn’t take an expert to know the formula – so the real question becomes why are we as a nation not following it?

Well let me ask you this – how do you know when you really know something? It is my experience that you only really know something when you put it into practice – when you do it. If all the majority of American have done is read or heard about it and have not introduced it to the cells of their body through the actual doing of it – it’s no wonder they don’t know it yet!

If people really knew the truth in that quote on a cellular level they would be far more compelled to act upon it. Perhaps a shift in our collective motivation psychology from avoiding or “fighting obesity” to achieving and staying fit may help in becoming at least a little more acquainted with the truth… although we may not fully “know it” yet.

But what the hell do I know? After all I was the “expert” being quoted in the paper.

You tell me – what can we do to change the direction obesity is going in this country… or should I say fitness is not going.

On the other hand, our ego is responsible for our protection and safety – in doing so it often acts like an overzealous park ranger. It sit’s up in the tower with its binoculars and shouts DANGER–LOOK OUT every time someone lights a match or a little possum pokes its head out of a hole.

The ego is also what’s responsible for our anger and rage. Think about it. The last time you got cut off on the highway or someone wouldn’t let you in the merge lane from the on ramp… “F-U – you freaking son of a bitch!” You got pissed, didn’t you? WHY?

Were you really at risk of life and limb? Or was it that your space, power, and sense of control were being threatened?

I had an interesting experience tonight that put a spotlight on the part of my ego I thought I had under control. My wife and I spent the last 90 minutes alongside our two 9 month old Schnauzers at a group dog training class. I was in charge of our little female, Tootsie while Dawn had the beast, Bosco. As the training progressed and the drills got increasingly complex Tootsie began challenging me more and more. She simply refused to lie-down and getting her to stay was impossible. She knows the verbal commands but with over twenty dogs in the class I am quite sure she was as distracted – as was I.

There was one incident where we were all instructed to have our dogs lie-down and stay while we backed away. All the dogs except Tootsie complied. I must have spent 10 minutes while everyone watched trying to get her to obey the command. As the seconds ticked by I could feel myself becoming more and more frustrated and angry– (here’s the interesting part) not because she wasn’t getting it, but rather because I was being disobeyed. I could feel my power and command of the situation being challenged even taken away… in front of a group of strangers. It was that delicate part of my ego that I had long since thought I had conquered that was being threatened… by a dog no less.

What threatens your ego?

How delicate is your sense or power and control? Could a driver cutting you off, a partner rejecting your advances, the loss of a job, or some worldly possession cause you to freaking lose it? Why would something or someone else’s attempt to steel your power invoke such contempt and even rage?

As I said one of the ego’s jobs is protection and keeping you safe. It does that by maintaining the statuesque. Anything that threatens that statuesque is met with fear and often disguised as anger or rage. Whatever power it thinks you have it will fight to keep. Because we don’t recognize that power and control is nothing more than an illusion our ego can go on full action alert as soon at the illusion is threatened.

Tootsie would testify to that – if she could talk. She was able to shatter my illusion of control and power with a single “I don’t think so” attitude. As I was fighting with her and losing – it dawned on me that it was my fear, frustration, and anger that was actually causing the situation. I stopped, took a deep breath, gave Tootsie a big hug and started all over – this time from a place of love and a desire to help her learn and grow.

After receiving a $550 million dollar government grant the research team led by Dr. David Sticky, PHD and Dr. Sara Sweet, PHD began clinical trials on Tuesday that included two double blind, placebo controlled studies.

According to Dr. Sweet, “So far the trials have added support to the hypothesis that it takes more than 100 actual licks to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.”

The original studies performed at UCLA involved only 20 patients but was later discredited after further testing revealed that 5 or the 20 test subjects were taking anabolic steroids to enhance their licking ability.

I watch very little television these days. After all, why would I? There’s so little time and way too much bad news being televised. Who needs it! Every now and than however a show comes along that sparks my curiosity.

A new “reality” program called, ’The Secret Millionaire’ on FOX network did just that. The show features different “self absorbed” multi-millionaires who go completely undercover as an almost destitute person living at the poverty level. The undercover millionaire is sent to a some remote poverty stricken area of the US to live for a full week with only a few welfare level dollars in his or her pocket. They have to find a job if they are going to make it.

Their main objective is to find some poor unfortunate individual or organization worthy of help, then wright them a check for some fairly big bucks. The total give away is in the area of $100,000.00 or more of their own money. Although the show itself is tainted with an obvious philanthropy-for-profit undertone (which I have no real problem with) the end result was quite inspiring.

I found myself having to wipe more than a few tears away from my eyes as I watched the faces of the people who were so desperately in need receive a check for a substantial amount of money.

This wasn’t a handout to people who have found themselves in dire straits as a result of alcoholic or drug abuse, but rather a helping hand for people who have chosen inspite of their own circumstances to stay in their communities and give back, contribute, and help others purely out of the goodness of their own heart.

When the show ended I was left with several questions and impressions not the least of which was how important money really is in helping others less fortunate.

As good old Abe Lincoln once said,“The best way to help the poor is by not being one.” What a gift it would be to be able to go out into the community and give back at that level.

Then I asked myself how I can do more to help others with the time and gifts I already have at my disposal? As a leader you need to ask yourself that same question.

Not only that but how can we do more to inspire others to do more as well. I’m looking for your suggestions and solutions… let me know your thoughts about the show and about giving back.

Below is an email I received early this morning and my answer to their question. I have also included one of my most favorite workout routines for everyone to enjoy.

All I ask is that you leave a comment and tell me your response/results from using this program.

Hello Mr Tom Terwilliger.

I am from norway and is 48 years old. I remember you from the muscle & fitness. I always thougt you had a vere good physique.

I wonder if you could give me some general advice about training. I have trained on and off for many years and have always trained heavy(5 to 8 reps). My shoulders and knees are now starting to ache the day after a heavy session.

Is it OK to train lighter with more reps and shorter rest? I want to continue building muscle. Should I train intensive(to failure?)

Hope you have the time to give me some general advice.

Thanks, per gunnar olsen, Norway

Gunnar, Great to hear from you and I appreciate the compliment about my physique back in the day!

You ask a very good question. First, let me first say I am going to be turning 50 in January so I know exactly what you mean about the post workout aches and pains, in fact they’re more like pre-during and post-workout pains now. But I still train extremely hard and are glad to hear that you are as well, why da hell not?!

I credit my longevity success to variety in my training. One half of the year I train with moderate weight and higher reps 20, 15, 10 generally using either super or giant sets (combing 2-3 exercises back to back). And one fourth of the year is spent training very heavy with reps as low as 2-4. The final quarter, I go extremely light with very high reps (100) to strengthen connective tissue and shock the muscle big time.

As for intensity, keep it high but listen to the feedback from your body, it will tell you if you need rest of if yoiu need to back off a bit. I also mix up the routines every 8-12 weeks so that my joints aren’t constantly bombarded from the same angle and movement. Mixing things up also keeps my body responding to the exercise rather than getting stale through adaptation.

My recommendation would be to take a week off from your current training to allow your body to heal and recover then start back with something completely different than what you have been used to. I have attached a copy of the 100’s routine I have been staggering into my regiment for years. Try it. Either you will love or absolutley hate it.

You may also want to include some glutamine and some live greens with your post workout drink for added recover. And you should be taking a joint formula with glucosamine and chondroitin.

Also check out my new personal development program THE LEAP. One of the components goes deep into developing “Body Rapport” and I believe you would benefit from it. Either way give me a shout again when you are 60 and we’ll talk more about aches and pains.

Good luck Gunner!
