It can be freaking overwhelming at times. Other times it seems like we’re running on auto pilot.

Just the other day for example, I was headed to Colorado Springs from Denver and after arriving at my destination – I had vertically no recollection of driving or even what exit I took to get there. I had taken the drive so many times that it was programmed in.

It was as if I were in a trance the entire drive down except when some idiot in a semi cut me off doing 90mph. Then somehow as if on its own with no conscious effort on my part, my finger popped up…. followed by a short all be it intense stream of obscenities flowing from my lips.

It was like a reflex or part of the natural fight or flight response – or what I now call the fight/flight/finger response.

Like walking, breathing or the pumping of blood to and from the heart much of that stuff that happens automatically without us ever thinking about it is the job of your unconscious mind.

Your unconscious (or subconscious) mind is responsible for almost 90% of your actual mental activity and most of it is happening below our conscious radar.

Imagine a massive iceberg for a moment… your conscious mind is represented by what you see on the surface which is approximately 10% of the mass. This is the realm we like to think of as CHOICE.

The vast majority of the iceberg like your unconscious mind is somewhat hidden below the surface. And whether you’re aware of it or not it has massive influence over the vast majority of your actions, decisions and the choices you make on a minute to minute day to day basis… like flicking the bone at a truck driver that could run your ass over without a second thought.

Logically that might not have been the best choice but the emotional part of the brain can often hijack logic and automatically trigger an otherwise foolish response.

Consciously you may have decided to get up and go to the gym this morning, or grab those two beers last night, what kind of shape you’re going to be in or even the amount of money you make. But what you’re likely not aware of is the influence your unconscious programming had on those decisions.

Like the blueprints and programming you created early on about how to walk, talk and all the little idiosyncrasies you have – you we’re also busy creating unconscious blueprints and programming for how much success, happiness, fitness and money you we’re going to have… as well as the way you response to stress or fear. All based on some early experiences you had, and or the decisions or beliefs you created.

The very programs you likely created to help you safely navigate your environment at that time my now limit your options and choices and may have become the primary factors in limiting your ability to achieve what you want… providing you know what you want.

My goal was to get to Colorado Springs and back home again safely in one piece and yet my very reaction to the environment around me could have produced a decidedly different result. In many respects it was a fear based reaction.

That reaction unless identified and re-programmed does and will continue to represent a restriction and limitation to the otherwise more empowering and appropriate choices available.

Maybe it’s time to start questioning some of your unconscious automatic responses to what’s been cutting you off or getting in your way. Maybe it’s time to scrap some of the old blueprints and start building a new set of plans for the type of choice you want to make consciously.

We’re taught to keep our eye on the ball and to focus on the outcome not the obstacle. Which I’m sure you’d agree is incredibly sound advice.

Too often we see only what stands between us and what we want and allow those things to stop us from moving forward or keep us from taking the first step. The truth is we’re always going to encounter resistance in the pursuit of what we want – most of which with the right plan, enough determination and strength of will can be overcome.

The more subversive and covert stumbling block for countless otherwise great achievers is the “internal resistance” they counter – but don’t have a clue it’s what’s slowing them down because it is on the unconscious level.

In the video I talk about the “end result” or outcome being like the leaves on a plant. Because they’re visible we get so focused on the leaves it’s all we pay any attention to….

“I must have great leaves.”

“I must have great leaves.”

“I must have great leaves.”

…and wind up ignoring what’s going on below the surface at the level of the roots.

But if the plant is going to flourish we must water and nurture the roots not the leaves.

If you have a values, integrity or worthiness conflict between what you want on the outside (the leaves) and what is going on inside (the roots) you will (not maybe) encounter overwhelming resistance, frustration and very likely failure.

The key is to fertilize, water, nurture the soil, and the roots. The only way to do that is to take your sights off the goal and focus on your internal rather than external growth.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Learn one of the most powerful and controversial strategies for eliminating the fear of failure - permanently and how to start to break through to the success you deserve.

Overcoming the fear of failure: “Make failure your goal?” Sounds crazy… I know.

Through my own experience and the study of countless great achievers I am convinced that we must learn to embrace the possibility of failing if we are going to succeed… and if we are going to succeed BIG we must get comfortable with the possibility of failing BIG and have the emotional ability to deal with it … not if, but when it shows up.

This program goes a step beyond even that broad and courageous thinking and suggests a new paradigm regarding failure. Like the radical treatment of claustrophobia by locking someone in a closet until they “get over it” this new paradigm will scramble your old beliefs and stir up some deeply engrained fears and beliefs around the very thing we fear most… failure.

So what is your “Success Thermostat?”

Like the well known and much talked about “metabolic thermostat” which keeps most people stuck a certain body weight via a very definite and stubborn set point – you have an internal success thermostat with a specific set point that is likely keeping you stuck at a familiar and “comfortable” level in your relationship, business, money, and ability to achieve your full potential.

How do you know if you have a set point in some area of your life? Simple, look at your results. If you’ve been at the same level of income, level of fitness and health, or in and out of unsatisfying relationships – it is very likely your internal thermostat has been determined and set in that area.

For years I seemed to be stuck at a $40,000 a year income level and no matter how much my skill level and credentials grew my income stayed roughly the same. Then I learned that $40 G was almost exactly what my dad earned while raising 6 kids. He was my model for how it was done and evidently that was how I set my success thermostat to do it.

PROBLEM: Just knowing your set point has been predetermined is simply not enough to change it. Think about it. Most people who have been overweight for years KNOW THEIR OVERWEIGHT but knowing does not change anything… other than adding to the frustration? NO!

What you need to know is how you created this set-point for yourself and more importantly how can you “re-set” it to achieve whatever you want in life?

Let me explain how it works - Re-Set It NOW

Then let me know what you think.

There’s a saying…

“How you do anything is how you do everything”

When I was pursuing my athletic career my coach once told me he could always tell who had the real potential to go all the way to be a great champion and make it to the top.

It had nothing to do with genetics or even who trained the hardest. But rather it had everything to do with everything.

How a man conducted his life off the playing field in the real world is the true indicator of championship stock.

My coach knew and I quickly found out that if someone gives 100% to everything they do including the small seemingly inconsequential details if they play full out even when the stakes are low or meaningless to someone else.

If they give 100% even when no one else is watching; they quickly develop the empowering habit and championship attribute of expecting 100% from themselves at that moment of truth when everything is on the line to them there is no other way.
